What a day!
On December 29, 2024, three significant aviation incidents occurred:
- Jeju Air Flight 7C2216 Crash in South Korea: A Jeju Air Boeing 737-800, arriving from Bangkok, crashed during landing at Muan International Airport. The aircraft failed to deploy its landing gear, skidded off the runway, struck a concrete fence, and burst into flames. Tragically, 179 of the 181 people on board perished, making it one of South Korea’s worst aviation disasters in recent history. Preliminary reports suggest a bird strike warning was issued just before the crash, and both flight data recorders have been retrieved for investigation.
- Light Plane Crash Near Yamba, Australia: A light aircraft crashed near McIntyres Airfield on the New South Wales North Coast. The pilot, 67-year-old businessman Jim Auld, was killed, and his son, Robert Auld, 32, sustained serious injuries. The crash occurred shortly after 11:30 am during takeoff. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.
- Air Canada Flight Incident in Halifax, Canada: An Air Canada flight from St. John’s to Halifax experienced a malfunction during landing when one of its wheels failed. The plane skidded on the runway, and its wing burst into flames. Fortunately, there were no major injuries or fatalities reported. This incident occurred on the same night as the South Korea crash, highlighting a series of aviation mishaps within a short timeframe.
These incidents have prompted aviation authorities to initiate thorough investigations to determine their causes and implement measures to enhance flight safety.
