ABUJA – The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced the end of tenure of its Executive Chairman, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra

In a statement signed by Mrs. Samiat Olabimpe Lawal, Director of Public Affairs, the Commission assured that the transition process would be seamless, with sustained focus on its ongoing digital reforms and commitment to credible, technology-driven demographic management in support of national development.

Following the expiration of his tenure on October 28, 2025, the Honourable Federal Commissioner representing Niger State, Hon. Muhammad Usman Dattijo, has assumed office as Acting Chairman.

He will oversee the Commission’s affairs pending the swearing-in of Hon. Aminu Yusuf (Talban Wushishi), appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as substantive Chairman.

Appointed in October 2020 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, Hon. Kwarra’s tenure was defined by institutional renewal, professionalism, and strategic focus that repositioned the NPC as a data-driven agency anchored on evidence-based planning and development.

Under his leadership, the Commission made remarkable strides in census preparedness, digital mapping, and geo-spatial innovation, laying the groundwork for Nigeria’s first-ever Digital Population and Housing Census.

His administration also introduced key initiatives such as the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (e-CRVS) system and the National Geo-Referenced Infrastructure Geo-Spatial Data Repository, which modernized Nigeria’s demographic data architecture and strengthened policy decision-making across all levels of government.

Hon. Kwarra further deepened partnerships with national and international development agencies, including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), World Bank, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

His tenure also prioritized staff welfare, capacity building, and institutional accountability, fostering a culture of innovation and service excellence within the Commission.

Meanwhile, Hon. Aminu Yusuf’s appointment as substantive Chairman has been confirmed by the Senate.

He is expected to assume duty officially after his inauguration by President Tinubu.
