Supreme Court Stops NASS from Going Ahead With Constitution Amendment

There seems to be a temporary setback for the National Assembly over its face-off with the Executive arm of the Federal Government concerning the amendment to the 1999 constitution as the Supreme Court on Thursday ordered that parties maintain status quo while the case is still before the court.

A seven-man panel of justices of the Supreme Court, led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, ‎Justice Mahmud Mohammed, also directed the issuance of hearing notice on the NASS for it to appear on June 18 being the next adjourned date.

The appearance of the National Assembly is for it to respond to the suit by the Executive arm against any proposed alterations to the constitution.

President Goodluck Jonathan had prior to institutionalising the case, wrote back to the National Assembly detailing some alterations in the amendment and complaining that such alterations were not in the best interest of the country.
